Uso de Inteligência Artificial
Artificial Intelligence Use Policy
Vigiles – Civil Defense, Social Defense and Public Security Journal recognizes that Artificial Intelligence (AI) tools and resources may assist in different stages of scientific research and scholarly communication. Their use, however, must comply with the principles of transparency, accountability, research integrity, and human oversight.
Vigiles adopts, as a reference for this policy, the guidance issued by the Scientific Electronic Library Online (SciELO) concerning the use of Artificial Intelligence tools and resources in research communication.
1. Authors' Responsibility
The use of AI tools does not transfer or reduce the authors' responsibility for the content, originality, accuracy, integrity, and proper attribution of the information presented in the manuscript.
Only human beings may be listed as authors or co-authors of works submitted to or published by Vigiles. AI tools, systems, or applications may not be listed as authors or co-authors, nor may they be assigned authorship responsibility.
Authors are fully responsible for verifying and validating content produced or modified with the assistance of AI tools, including factual information, interpretations, citations, references, data, tables, figures, images, and other elements of the manuscript.
2. Transparency and Disclosure of AI Use
The use of AI tools or resources in the preparation, writing, editing, translation, analysis, processing, or production of manuscript content must be transparently disclosed by the authors.
The disclosure should, where applicable, identify the tool or system used, its purpose, and the stage of the work in which it was used.
When AI use is related to the content or procedures of the research, the information should be disclosed in the Abstract and in the Methods section or its equivalent, according to the nature and purpose of the use. Where appropriate, additional information may be provided in a dedicated AI-use statement, acknowledgments, or another suitable section of the manuscript.
The use of AI tools for language editing, translation, textual organization, or other auxiliary activities should also be disclosed when it has made a relevant contribution to the preparation of the manuscript.
3. Verification of Information and References
Authors must critically review all content produced or suggested by AI tools before incorporating it into the manuscript.
Authors are responsible for verifying the accuracy, relevance, and reliability of information and bibliographic references generated or suggested by AI systems. AI tools may produce inaccurate or distorted information or nonexistent references; therefore, no information or reference should be incorporated into the manuscript without proper verification.
Sources used in the research must be properly identified and cited, regardless of whether they were located or suggested with the assistance of AI tools.
4. Research Integrity and Originality
The use of AI does not exempt authors from complying with the principles of research integrity, originality, copyright, and plagiarism prevention adopted by Vigiles.
Authors must critically assess content generated or modified by AI and ensure that the manuscript does not contain improperly reproduced material, incorrectly attributed content, or material presented as original without appropriate acknowledgment of its source.
5. Protection of Data and Information
Authors should avoid entering into AI tools personal data, confidential information, unpublished data, protected information, or other content whose disclosure or processing could violate confidentiality obligations, third-party rights, applicable data protection requirements, or intellectual property rights.
Authors are responsible for assessing in advance the terms governing the use, storage, and processing of data by the tools they employ.
6. Non-disclosure of AI Use
The deliberate concealment of the use of AI tools or AI-generated content, when such use should be disclosed under this policy, is inconsistent with the principles of transparency, accountability, and research integrity adopted by Vigiles.
The responsible use of AI is permitted; what is required is that its use be transparent, verifiable, and subject to human oversight and authorial responsibility.
